What Happened During the First Gulf War:
1. Iraq wouldn't stop invasion their of Kuwait (invasion occurred because Hussein accused Kuwait of having excess oil from the Ar-Rumaylah oil fields on the Iraq- Kuwait border) so the UN council called for a "use any force necessary" attack against Iraq if they didn't leave Kuwait by January 15, 1991.
2. Iraq didn't leave, so on January 17, 1991 US launched Operation Desert Storm (air attacks) and on February 24, 1991 Operation Desert Sabre (ground attacks) was launched against Iraq. (Iraqis defeated and Kuwait liberated)
3. On February 28, 1991 a ceasefire was called where Iraq recognized Kuwait's sovereignty and Iraq also agreed to get rid of their weapons of mass destruction.
4. In total after the war there were 8,000- 10,000 Iraqi forces killed compared to 300 of the UN coalition killed.
